Bassist Franco Onnis has been immersed in music since childhood. In 1982, during the height of the Heavy Metal movement, he founded Rod Sacred in Sardinia. Initially performing covers of Saxon, Iron Maiden, and Scorpions, the band quickly gained recognition for its electrifying live performances.
By 1985, Rod Sacred released their first demo, Speel Of Steel, which drew national attention. This led to their 1988 EP, 1988, followed by their debut full-length album in 1990, which was an instant success. Metal Hammer named them Europe’s best emerging band, and major tours followed.
Despite internal changes and setbacks—including the tragic loss of guitarist Paolo Bonilli in 1989—the band pressed on, securing deals and expanding their reach. In the mid-90s, Onnis briefly stepped away, forming Golden Ace before reviving Rod Sacred in 1996 with Sucker of Soul’s.
After various lineup changes and label disputes, Onnis reformed the band in 2013, leading to new records, extensive touring (sharing the stage with metal giants like Lacuna Coil and Rhapsody of Fire), and collaborations. Their latest album, Another Day (2023), has been met with critical acclaim. In 2024, Rod Sacred continues touring, with a new album and a full discography box set on the horizon.
